In July 2023, Erik ten Hag stripped Maguire of his captaincy as he fell out of favour with the coach

Manchester United defender, Harry Maguire, has recently signed a new one-year contract with the club. This move underlines his revival under interim boss Michael Carrick and is a testament to his resilience amidst turbulent times at Old Trafford.

The 33-year-old central defender was nearing the end of his current deal which was due to expire at the end of this season. However, Manchester United has shown faith in him by offering an extension. Interestingly, while Maguire's basic salary has been reduced in this new agreement, it contains clauses that could see him earn more overall if the club qualifies for the Champions League.

Harry Maguire, Manchester United defender, said:

"Representing Manchester United is the ultimate honour. It is a responsibility that makes myself and my family proud every single day. I am delighted to extend my journey at this incredible club to at least eight seasons and continue to play in front of our special supporters to create more amazing moments together."

Maguire joined Manchester United from Leicester City for £80m in 2019 - a world record transfer fee for a defender back then. Since then he has made 266 appearances for United and helped them secure victories like winning the League Cup in 2022-23 and FA Cup in subsequent season.

However, it hasn't all been smooth sailing for Maguire at Manchester United. He was appointed captain just five months after his arrival by former manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer but faced criticism from some quarters despite being consistently selected by Solskjaer and his successor Ralf Rangnick. In April 2022, Cheshire Police conducted a sweep of his house following a bomb threat adding further stress to an already challenging period.

Struggles under Erik Ten Hag

Maguire fell out of favour under Erik ten Hag and was stripped off captaincy in July 2023. Shortly afterwards, there were talks about him moving to West Ham but he decided against it choosing instead to stay put at Old Trafford where he continued struggling for game time under Ruben Amorim.

Despite the challenges, Maguire has shown remarkable resilience. His career at Manchester United saw a revival under interim boss Michael Carrick. Since Carrick's appointment in mid-January, Maguire has started all 10 matches, demonstrating his value to the team and silencing critics.

Harry Maguire's new deal with Manchester United is more than just a contract extension; it is an affirmation of his ability to bounce back from adversity and continue contributing significantly to the team. It also highlights how important a role a manager plays in shaping player careers – as evidenced by Maguire’s resurgence under Michael Carrick.
