Indian media conglomerate, Zee Entertainment Enterprises, is making a comeback in the sports industry with its new four-channel linear sports broadcast offering, Unite8 Sports. This move comes amidst rumors of Zee securing the FIFA World Cup 2026 rights agreement for India.
Zee's latest venture into the sports market includes two primary offerings: 'Unite8 Sports 1' and 'Unite8 Sports 2'. The former will provide English-language coverage while the latter will cater to Hindi-speaking audiences. Each offering will have both standard and high-definition channels, bringing the total to four channels under Unite8.
This re-entry marks a significant shift for Zee Entertainment after it exited from the sector following a failed ICC cricket sublicensing agreement with Star in 2024.
Diverse range of sporting events
With its new brand, Unite8 Sports, Zee plans to air coverage of various sporting events including cricket, soccer (football), kabaddi, badminton as well as combat sports such as wrestling and boxing. In fact, this isn't their first stint in broadcasting cricket matches; they previously aired cricket’s ILT20 competition from UAE.
Zee is reportedly on track to be announced as the rights holder for FIFA World Cup broadcasts in India. With other major players reluctant to meet FIFA’s demands regarding broadcasting rights costs and less than three weeks remaining before kick-off time at the tournament venue - there's an increasing likelihood that Zee may secure this deal.
The Indian subcontinent remains one of few territories where a deal has not yet been finalized by FIFA. Initially aiming for $100 million from this market (for rights to both 2026 and 2030 tournaments), it seems like they might have to settle for less than $35 million in total.
Previous rights holders and current market valuation
Viacom18, now part of JioStar, held the rights for the 2022 World Cup. They reportedly paid just over $60 million for that edition alone. However, with matches being held in Qatar, the time zone was more favorable for Indian audiences.
Currently, JioStar is not willing to move from its valuation of between $20 million and $25 million. This could potentially force FIFA to further reduce its original predicted figure.
Zee's re-entry into sports broadcasting with Unite8 Sports comes at a crucial time when FIFA is seeking a suitable partner for World Cup broadcasts in India. If successful in securing this deal, it could mark a significant milestone in Zee's comeback journey within the sports industry.
