Former manager Gary O'Neil is reportedly in discussions with Wolverhampton Wanderers (Wolves) about a potential return to the club, less than a year after his dismissal. This development comes as the Premier League club, currently threatened by relegation, begins its search for a new head coach.
O'Neil's departure from Wolves occurred in December 2024 following an underwhelming start to the 2024-25 campaign. However, recent reports suggest that he is now engaged in positive initial discussions about rejoining the Molineux side. At age 42, the former West Ham midfielder is ready for another shot at management and appears open to returning to Wolves.
Search for new leadership
The process of appointing a new head coach began following Vitor Pereira's dismissal on Sunday morning. BBC Sport reported that O'Neil was among several contenders being considered as Pereira's replacement at the Midlands club.
Rob Edwards, current boss of Middlesbrough FC, was also named as one of these contenders. However, Edwards’ appointment could present numerous challenges due to his existing commitments with Middlesbrough FC who are believed to be entitled to significant compensation should their manager leave.
Other contenders
While O’Neil seems well-positioned for a return given these circumstances, sources have indicated that he isn't alone in contention for this role. Wolves have historically appointed managers with close ties to high-profile agent Jorge Mendes such as Nuno Espirito Santo, Bruno Lage and Pereira.
It has been understood that besides O’Neil’s candidature; Wolves are also considering at least one other manager from Mendes’ roster of clients. This managerial decision comes at an important time for Wolves who are yet without victory after the first 10 games of the Premier League season. The club's fans and stakeholders will be eagerly awaiting the announcement of a new head coach, hoping for a turnaround in their fortunes.
While O'Neil's return to Wolves is not yet confirmed, his experience and familiarity with the club make him a strong contender. However, it remains to be seen who will ultimately take up this challenging role amidst Wolves' ongoing struggles in the Premier League.
