AS Roma, the Serie A club, have begun discussions about a potential move for Manchester United forward Joshua Zirkzee. The Dutch striker has been struggling to find his footing in the Premier League and is reportedly seeking a move away from Old Trafford.
Four months into the 2025-26 season, Zirkzee has yet to start in the Premier League. His limited playing time this season includes only 82 minutes on the pitch in England's top flight and brief appearances against teams like Brentford and Brighton & Hove Albion. This lack of game time has prompted him to consider leaving Old Trafford.
Possible return to Serie A for Manchester United forward?
Sky Sports reports that Zirkzee has instructed his representatives to secure him a loan move during the upcoming January transfer window. He's already attracted interest from two prominent Serie A clubs where he previously excelled during his tenure at Bologna. AS Roma appears particularly interested in acquiring him. The club is currently negotiating with his representatives over salary details, with Zirkzee willing to accept a pay cut as part of his career revival strategy.
With Paulo Dybala suffering an injury against Milan recently and their attacking third producing only ten goals so far this season - one of the lowest among top-tier teams - AS Roma are keen on bolstering their forward line-up. Their coach Gasperini sees potential in Zirkzee who scored 14 times and provided nine assists during his 58-game stint at Bologna.
However, even if Manchester United approves of Zirkzee's move abroad, AS Roma may face stiff competition from fellow Italian giants Milan who are also looking to strengthen their squad after recent unsuccessful seasons.
Competition from Milan
Under new management by Massimiliano Allegri, Milan is determined to re-establish their dominance in Italian football. With key players Santiago Jimenez and Christian Pulisic currently injured, Allegri has limited options for the centre forward position, making Zirkzee an attractive prospect.
Roma's current squad includes only two proper No.9 profiles - Evan Ferguson and Artem Dovbyk. With Ferguson out due to injury and Dovbyk struggling to adapt to the competition, Roma is under pressure to improve their attacking line-up. Their star player Dybala is also sidelined with a thigh injury.
Given these circumstances, Zirkzee could be just what Roma needs. His previous success at Bologna proves his potential as a clinical player who could help improve Roma's conversion rate which has cost them points this season. Joshua Zirkzee's potential move from Manchester United could prove beneficial for both the player seeking more game time and AS Roma looking for attacking reinforcements.
