Lineker will still appear on BBC, covering the FA Cup next season and the 2026 World Cup

Gary Lineker, the renowned Match of the Day host, has officially announced his retirement from sports broadcasting. The former England captain has confirmed that he will not be seeking another broadcasting role after fulfilling his final BBC commitments next year.

Lineker, who has been a staple in sports broadcasting for over two decades, will step down as host of the iconic football highlights show at the end of this season. This marks an end to his 26-year tenure with Match of the Day. However, fans can still expect to see him on screen as he continues to front BBC's coverage for both FA Cup next season and 2026 World Cup in summer.

Despite speculation about extending his career in broadcasting beyond these commitments, Lineker has firmly ruled out such possibilities. His departure signifies a significant shift in British sports television landscape.

Gary Lineker, BBC Pundit, said:

"Once I’ve done the World Cup, I won’t be a football presenter again. I’ll focus more on my podcast empire,"

Transitioning roles

Following Lineker's exit from Match of the Day, three alternating presenters are set to take up his mantle - Kelly Cates, Mark Chapman and Gabby Logan. This change is expected to bring fresh perspectives and dynamics into one of Britain’s most beloved football shows. While leaving behind a remarkable legacy in sports broadcasting, Gary Lineker is also known for his successful ventures outside television studios. He co-owns Goalhanger Productions - a podcast production company that was established back in 2018.

Since its inception, Goalhanger Productions has experienced rapid growth and now hosts several leading shows including 'The Rest is Football' where Lineker stars alongside Alan Shearer and Micah Richards; and 'The Rest is Politics'. These podcasts have gained popularity among listeners for their insightful discussions on football and politics respectively.

While Gary Lineker's retirement from sports broadcasting marks the end of an era, his influence in the world of football and beyond continues to thrive. His contributions to Match of the Day will be remembered fondly by fans, and his future endeavors with Goalhanger Productions are eagerly anticipated.
