Fulham Football Club are reportedly in discussions to appoint Alvaro Arbeloa as the successor to outgoing manager Marco Silva. This move comes after Silva's decision to leave Craven Cottage to become Benfica manager, following their loss of Jose Mourinho to Real Madrid.
Arbeloa, 43, is currently a strong contender for the managerial role at Fulham. He had an interim stint at Madrid last season after replacing Xabi Alonso who moved on to manage Chelsea. However, sources close to the club have downplayed suggestions that talks are in advanced stages.
Arbeloa has spent his entire coaching career at Madrid, starting from working with youth teams and eventually stepping up into an interim position last season. His experience and familiarity with high-level football could be valuable assets for Fulham as they seek new leadership.
Player turned coach
Before transitioning into coaching, Arbeloa had a successful playing career which included two spells at Santiago Bernabeu in Madrid. He also has Premier League experience having played for both Liverpool and West Ham - an aspect that could potentially give him an edge in understanding the dynamics of English football.
In their search for Silva's replacement, Fulham also held discussions with Kieran McKenna. However, it would have cost them £8m just to release him from his contract at Ipswich Town. McKenna has since left Ipswich Town stating he wanted a break from football management to spend time with his family.
Last season saw Fulham finish 11th in the Premier League table under Silva's guidance. As they look forward towards the next season under potential new management, fans will be eager to see how these changes might impact their performance on field. While the talks with Arbeloa are not confirmed to be in advanced stages, his potential appointment could bring a fresh perspective and new strategies to Fulham. His experience both as a player and coach at Madrid could prove beneficial for the club's future endeavors.
