In June and July, the platform amassed a total of 4.5 million views

DAZN, the popular sports streaming service, has made a significant splash in its first season of covering Belgium's top football league. The company recently announced that it recorded an impressive 750,000 views for the first eight matches of the Belgian Pro League. This figure is described as "unprecedented" by DAZN and marks a promising start to their coverage of Belgian football.

The initial figures for DAZN's coverage have been nothing short of extraordinary. In June alone, the platform totalled 2 million views and followed up with an even more impressive 2.5 million views in July. To put these numbers into perspective, last season's first matchday had an average reach of just 525,000 viewers.

This surge in viewership signifies not only a growing interest in Belgian football but also highlights the increasing popularity and acceptance of streaming services like DAZN among sports fans.

Limited availability

Despite these encouraging figures, there are still some limitations to accessing Belgian league matches on DAZN. Currently, these games are only available to watch through the DAZN app as no agreement has been reached yet with operators such as Telenet and Proximus.

However, this hasn't deterred fans from tuning into their favourite teams' games via the app - demonstrating how digital platforms are becoming increasingly integral to sports broadcasting.

Partnerships with broadcasters

In addition to its standalone app offering, DAZN has also formed partnerships with broadcasters VTM and VRT. These agreements allow both broadcasters to include clips from Belgian Pro League matches during their news bulletins - further expanding access to game highlights for fans who may not have access or prefer traditional television viewing methods over digital platforms.

Moreover, free highlights can be viewed through the DAZN app from 23:45 each match day, providing fans with a convenient way to catch up on the day's action.

DAZN's record-breaking start to its coverage of the Belgian Pro League is a testament to the growing popularity of both Belgian football and sports streaming services. Despite some limitations in availability, DAZN has managed to attract an impressive number of viewers and continues to expand its reach through partnerships with traditional broadcasters. As we move forward, it will be interesting to see how this dynamic evolves and what it means for the future of sports broadcasting.
