AzamTV, a leading pay-TV broadcaster based in Tanzania, has acquired the rights to broadcast the upcoming men's Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in nine sub-Saharan markets. This move is set to significantly enhance the viewing experience for soccer fans across these regions.
The deal, announced earlier this week, will see AzamTV broadcasting the 24-team tournament live and in high definition across Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Malawi, Botswana Zambia and Zimbabwe. The rights were secured through an agreement with New World TV - a satellite network that previously acquired AFCON rights for 2023.
New World TV holds broadcasting rights across sub-Saharan Africa and airs games in French English Portuguese as well as local African languages. This partnership with AzamTV extends their reach further into key African markets.
What to expect
The 2025 edition of AFCON is scheduled to take place between December 21st and January 18th in Morocco. Four out of the nine countries where AzamTV will be broadcasting - Tanzania, Zimbabwe, Zambia, and Uganda - have qualified for this prestigious tournament.
Viewers on Azam can access its coverage via linear channels online site or through its over-the-top streaming platform known as AzamTVMax. This multi-platform approach ensures that fans can enjoy seamless access to all matches regardless of their preferred viewing method. In addition to securing broadcast rights for AFCON other recent developments have also been made within African football broadcasting landscape. Earlier this month Confederation of African Football (CAF), awarded SuperSport - a MultiChoice-owned pay-TV heavyweight - extensive broadcast rights across sub-Saharan Africa.
SuperSport plans on rebranding one of its channels specifically for AFCON featuring live match coverage expert analysis top African football legends and multilingual commentary. This move is set to further enrich the viewing experience for soccer fans across the continent.
AzamTV's continued commitment
AzamTV has demonstrated a consistent commitment to bringing high-quality football content to its viewers. In addition to securing rights for AFCON matches, AzamTV also covered various CAF continental club competitions during the 2024-25 season through a deal dating back to September last year.
Jacob Joseph, chief executive of Azam Media, said:
"Football unites our continent, and AzamTV is proud to be the home of African football. We’re excited to bring the AFCON 2025 experience closer to fans, wherever they are.”
This continued investment in sports broadcasting underscores AzamTV's dedication towards providing top-tier sports content for its audience, catering specifically to sports fans and sports betting enthusiasts across sub-Saharan Africa.
