Former England winger, Raheem Sterling, has been arrested on suspicion of drug-driving following an alleged car crash into motorway barriers. The incident occurred on the M3 in Hampshire on Thursday morning.
Sterling, who most recently played for Feyenoord in the Dutch Eredivisie, is suspected of crashing his Lamborghini into barriers. Following his arrest, the 31-year-old footballer has been released on bail pending further enquiries by Hampshire Police.
A source close to Sterling confirmed the arrest but told BBC Sport there was "no proof" of drugs in his system at the time. The source also revealed that Sterling had faced "an extremely tough couple of years" and had been made to "feel worthless" and "forgotten about".
Career highlights
Sterling began his senior career with Liverpool before moving to Manchester City in 2015. During his tenure with City, he won four Premier League titles. In 2022 he signed with Chelsea where he made just 59 league appearances over four years - including a season-long loan at Arsenal.
In January this year, Sterling left Chelsea by mutual consent after agreeing a settlement package over the final 18 months of his contract worth more than £300,000-per-week. He then joined Feyenoord in February until the end of this season but only managed eight appearances for them.
On an international level, Sterling has earned himself quite a reputation as well. He boasts 82 England caps under his belt; notably winning one at the prestigious World Cup held in Qatar back in 2022.
Awaiting further developments
As it stands now, fans are awaiting further developments regarding this incident involving one of their favourite sports personalities.
Hampshire Police released statement:
"Just before 9am on Thursday, we received reports that a Lamborghini was in collision with barriers on the M3 southbound, close to the Minley Interchange. No other vehicles were involved and no injuries were reported.
"The driver, a 31-year-old man, from Berkshire, has been arrested on suspicion of driving a vehicle whilst unfit through drugs, driving dangerously, possession of a Class C drug and failing to provide a specimen. He has been bailed while our enquiries continue."
The situation serves as a reminder that even high-profile sports figures are not immune to personal struggles and legal issues. It also underscores the importance of mental health support in high-pressure professions such as professional football. While Sterling's arrest has certainly cast a shadow over his illustrious career, it is hoped that he will find the necessary support and guidance to navigate through this challenging period.
