Thanks to streaming services such as Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and Disney Plus, it has never been easier to binge-watch the best football documentaries.

In this day and age, there are countless on-demand films and series that enable fans to gain behind-the-scenes access to many of the sport’s biggest clubs (and Wrexham!) at the push of a button.

Here are seven of the best football documentaries available on live streaming services.

Diego Maradona (Amazon Prime Video)

Constructed from more than 500 hours of never-before-seen footage, Diego Maradona profiles the life of one of football’s greatest-ever players. The documentary was released in 2019 and is now available to stream via Amazon Prime Video.

Welcome to Wrexham (Disney Plus)

Welcome to Wrexham tells the story of two big-name actors, Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, buying and stewarding a lower-league Welsh club. The Disney Plus docuseries centres on the Hollywood pair’s attempts to transform the club’s fortunes and also highlights the town’s passion for the beautiful game.

Sunderland ‘Til I Die (Netflix)

Released in 2018, Sunderland ‘Til I Die was one of the first fly-on-the-wall football documentaries to land on Netflix. A second season was released in 2020, with cameras taking viewers behind the scenes of Sunderland AFC. Since then, Premier League clubs like Manchester City, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur have featured in Amazon’s All or Nothing series, a similar docuseries concept.

The Figo Affair: The Transfer that Changed Football (Netflix)

The Figo Affair: The Transfer that Changed Football takes an in-depth look at Luis Figo’s controversial 2000 transfer from Barcelona to Real Madrid. The Netflix documentary covers the ins and outs of the infamous deal, which led to a pig’s head being thrown at the Portuguese superstar.

Sir Alex Ferguson: Never Give In (Amazon Prime Video)

Sir Alex Ferguson is arguably the greatest manager in the history of football. In this Amazon Prime Video documentary, viewers learn about his beginnings in Scotland to his 27-year reign of unrivalled success at Manchester United.

I Believe in Miracles (Netflix)

On the topic of famous managers, let’s talk about I Believe in Miracles. The Netflix documentary tells the remarkable story of how Brian Clough took Nottingham Forest from second-tier obscurity to European glory in only a handful of years, while interviews with former players shed light on Clough’s unorthodox methods.

FIFA Uncovered (Netflix)

Released on Netflix just weeks before the start of the 2022 World Cup, FIFA Uncovered explores the dodgy history of football’s international governing body, exposing corruption, deception and a whole lot more.

If you’re looking for something new to watch, why not check out Real Madrid: Until The End? Presented by David Beckham, the three-part documentary is set to drop on Apple TV+ on March 10 and covers Los Blancos’ incredible 2021-22 campaign.
