Genoa vs Roma Match Preview

Published: Updated: 04:36, 27 Sep 2023

Roma will play away to Genoa in their next Serie A encounter as they look to climb up the table after a tough start.

Key Takeaways
  • Roma haven't lost to Genoa in last 17 meetings
  • Roma are currently 13th in the league
  • Genoa lost last match to Lecce

Jose Mourinho won't be a happy person after his side's tough start. Roma has been really inconsistent and have only won one game out of 5. Now is the situation for Roma to pick up pace otherwise they would be left behind in the race for Champions League

Genoa Form

Genoa is one of the newly promoted teams this season and so far their start has been even with a mixed bag of results. They won't be too disappointed with the results but could've been better if they didn't let some games go away easily. They have won game against Lazio and drawn against Napoli which shows the calibre in their side

Genoa have been promising with their game but have really pulled strings going forward. Their defence is going to be crucial for their success and so far, they haven't been really convincing. Good news for them has been their new signing Mateo Retegui who has been sublime in his first season at the club.

Roma Form

Roma have built a strong squad for this season with the arrival of Lukaku, Sanches, Paredes and Aouar and many more but so far results haven't gone in their favour. They are currently 13th in the league with one win, two draws and two losses to their name.

Despite a slow start, they seem to be now finding their feet. They won 7-0 against Empoli which was testament of their potential, however they drew 1-1 against Torino which reflects their inconsistency. Roma's defence has been their biggest concern and especially after the departure of Ibanez, they are finding it really tough.

Head-to-Head

Roma have a strong hold over Genoa in head to head record. In the last 17 games, they haven't lost a single game to them. Overall in 25 games, Genoa have won 3 while Roma have won 18.

Team News

Injuries have been the biggest concern for Mourinho since the start of season and still, they have four injuries. Kumbulla and Abraham are out with cruciate ligament injury, while Sanches and Smalling are nursing muscle injuries.

Genoa are going to be without three players for this game. Vogliacco is out with a thigh injury, Messias is nursing muscle injury while Caricol is suspended.

Key Player

Mateo Retegui has been really impressive for Genoa. He has shown instant impact after signing for this summer. Retegui has scored 4 goals for them in all competitions. He is electric with pace and can hurt badly on counter attacks. Retegui is surely one to watch out for from Genoa's team.

Lukaku has brought a fresh breath of air to the attack since his arrival. Roma was lacking a finisher up front and so far, he has brought that lethal touch. He has scored 3 goals in 4 games for them all competitions and has looked really impressive in Mourinho's system.

Final Thoughts

Roma are desperate to win and Genoa will present them a tough challenge. Roma have got some exciting names in their squad but the team is yet to come together as a whole. Their defence need pull off the socks if Roma want to tumble past Genoa.
