The primary characteristics of Sportable's Connected Ball technology involve delivering real-time data on the speed, spin, and trajectory of the ball

The Barclays Women’s Super League (WSL) is set to revolutionize the world of football by becoming the first league to implement Sportable’s Connected Ball technology. This groundbreaking move promises to bring unprecedented levels of performance insight and data to women's football, both on matchdays and in training environments.

Sportable’s FIFA certified Connected Ball technology will be integrated into Nike’s Official Matchballs, marking a significant step forward in the use of smart ball technology. This system will provide real-time tracking data during Barclays WSL matches, offering an unparalleled level of insight into player performance.

The key features of Sportable's Connected Ball technology include providing real-time information on ball speed, spin, and flight. Additionally, it offers data on high-intensity efforts and contextual workload. This innovative technology also provides valuable insights into team shape, tactical patterns, and off-the-ball actions to enhance both performance analysis and fan engagement.

Zarah Al-Kudcy, chief revenue officer, WSL Football, said:

“Nike’s new partnership with us is built on innovation and putting players first, which we have already seen with the rollout of boots and gloves for all players and goalkeepers without personal endorsement deals. Their desire to elevate the role of the ball through Sportable’s technology will enable us to provide enhanced performance data to our clubs as well as tell richer stories to our fans. We are excited to be the first football league in the world to use this technology.”

This wealth of data not only enhances coaching strategies but also enriches fan engagement by providing detailed match statistics.

Expanding boundaries beyond matchday

In addition to its deployment during matches, clubs will have the option to utilize this innovative technology within their training environments. This allows teams to leverage real-time insights for strategic planning and player development - a game-changer in enhancing overall team performance. Currently undergoing testing phases with Nike and WSL Football, Sportable plans to expand this project from the beginning of the 2026-27 season. Athlete and ball-tracking technology will then operate at every Barclays WSL match - a testament to how seriously these organizations are taking technological advancements in sports.

Sportable isn't new in bringing innovation through its cutting-edge technologies. It has already powered American football and rugby union where it focused on unlocking performance insights while boosting fan engagement through augmented reality graphics that power real-time match stats such as kick distance, pass distance, and territory gained. These were presented across broadcast and Six Nations digital channels.

The integration of Sportable's Connected Ball technology into the Barclays Women’s Super League matches marks a significant milestone in the evolution of women's football. By providing unprecedented levels of performance insight and data, this smart ball system is set to transform both matchday experiences and training environments - ultimately enhancing the game for players, coaches, and fans alike.
