Egypt team director, Ibrahim Hassan, has issued a warning to Mohamed Salah about the potential implications of moving to Major League Soccer (MLS) after his departure from Liverpool at the end of this season.
Mohamed Salah, 33, is currently in a state of uncertainty regarding his next career move. After an impressive nine-year stint with Liverpool that saw him win two Premier League titles and the Champions League, he is yet to decide on his future path. Despite interest expressed by MLS Commissioner Don Garber in seeing Salah join the league, it remains unclear whether any MLS teams will attempt to sign him.
Hassan has cautioned that a move to MLS could result in Salah fading into obscurity. This concern comes despite notable successes from other international football stars who have made similar moves. For instance, Argentina captain Lionel Messi joined Inter Miami in 2023 after trophy-laden stints with Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain and quickly became the club’s all-time top scorer.
Egypt national team director, Ibrahim Hassan, said:
“Personally, I would prefer him to stay in Europe. I have heard about offers from Paris Saint-Germain, Bayern Munich and clubs in the Italian league. A move to the Major League? He would be far too out of the spotlight. You won’t remember Salah any more than I remember (Lionel) Messi now, I don’t even try to watch him.”
Alternative options for Salah
While acknowledging the potential risks associated with an MLS move for such a high-profile player like Salah, Hassan suggested that Saudi Pro League could be a suitable alternative if he chooses not to stay in Europe.
Ibrahim Hassan added:
“If he does not receive offers from Europe, then a move to the Saudi league would be a good option, especially with big names such as Cristiano (Ronaldo)”,
Salah is currently sidelined due to injury and will miss Egypt’s ongoing training camp as they prepare for their World Cup matches in North America. In preparation for their World Cup journey which runs from June 11th through July 19th , Egypt recently secured a convincing 4-0 victory over Saudi Arabia on Friday and are set face Spain next Tuesday in Barcelona. As seven-time African champions, they find themselves grouped alongside Belgium, New Zealand and Iran at this year's tournament.
The advice given by Hassan to Salah reflects the high stakes of career decisions for footballers at the top level. As fans eagerly await Salah's decision, it is clear that his next move could have significant implications not only for his personal career but also for the teams and leagues involved.
