Tottenham Hotspur is reportedly in advanced discussions with Bayern Munich over the permanent transfer of young forward, Mathys Tel. The 19-year-old French player has been on the periphery of the Bayern squad since his arrival from Rennes in 2022 and is now seeking a move away from Allianz Arena to secure more playing time.
Tel's development has been somewhat hindered due to limited game time. Despite being a part of the team for three seasons, he has only started nine Bundesliga games. This lack of regular playtime has led to his decision to explore opportunities outside Allianz Arena.
Spurs have shown significant interest in Tel and are hopeful that a deal could be agreed upon for around €60million (£50.2m; $62.5m). If an agreement can be reached, it will then be up to Tel whether he wants to make North London his new football home.
Interest from other Premier League clubs
Premier League clubs like Manchester United and Chelsea have also expressed interest in acquiring Tel's services should he become available before the end of the transfer window. The Athletic reported on Wednesday that Manchester United were considering a loan move for him while Chelsea had made an enquiry about signing him earlier this month.
Despite limited opportunities, Tel managed impressive stats during his tenure at Bayern Munich. He made 83 appearances for them since arriving from Rennes, registering 16 goals and seven assists. At just 17 years old, he became Bayern’s youngest-ever goalscorer when he scored against Viktoria Cologne during their resounding 5-0 victory. He broke Jamal Musiala's previous record with this achievement.
During his debut season (2022-23), where Bayern won the Bundesliga title, Tel contributed five league goals. This season, he has featured 14 times in all competitions and played a significant role in Bayern's recent Champions League victory over Slovan Bratislava.
Coach's perspective
When asked about Tel after the 3-0 Europa League win over Elfsborg, head coach Ange Postecoglou didn't provide any specific details about his future at Bayern Munich. However, it is clear that Tel's potential move to Tottenham or any other club will be a significant development in this transfer window.
Tottenham Hotspur manager, Ange Postecoglou, said:
“I can’t tell you anything. I’ve been focussing on getting the team prepared tonight. Other people are working in the background. As I’ve said all along, I’m allowing them to get on with it and when and if there’s any news I’m sure I’ll find out.”
Mathys Tel’s potential move away from Allianz Arena could open up new opportunities for him to showcase his talent and further develop his skills. For Spurs or any other interested clubs, securing such a promising young player could prove to be an excellent investment for the future.
