Sky tipped DAZN to secure renewal for the Premier League games

Sky Deutschland, the pay-TV giant, has secured a long-term extension of its media rights agreement with English soccer’s Premier League (EPL). The deal ensures that Sky Sports channel will continue to exclusively broadcast all 380 Premier League games per season in Germany until the end of the 2027-28 season.

The renewed partnership between EPL and Sky Deutschland builds on their existing relationship which began at the start of the 2019-20 campaign. This new deal guarantees that out of all Premier League games, 250 will be shown live each season.

Sky regained these rights from streaming service DAZN in 2019, which had previously broadcasted English top-flight matches between 2016 and 2019. Prior to DAZN's intervention, Sky had held these rights for several years.

Sky holds big portfolio in Germany with major competitions

This move significantly expands Sky’s market share in soccer broadcasting within Germany. In addition to EPL matches, this TV giant also holds exclusive rights to air Germany’s domestic Bundesliga and its second tier - the 2.Bundesliga. Furthermore, it broadcasts the DFB Pokal matches.

Barny Mills, chief executive of Sky Deutschland, said:

“The Premier League is undoubtedly one of the top rights in international sport. With this exclusive extension, we have secured an important right that clearly underlines our leading position in sport.”

“In combination with the Bundesliga, the DFB Cup, and [motor racing’s] Formula 1 as well as the recently acquired rights to [motorcycling’s] MotoGP, [tennis’] ATP Tour, and the WTA, our customers can also look forward to an extensive, highly attractive sports program.”

Sky also have a strategic partnership with RTL till 2024/25 season

Currently, Sky's contract with EPL expires at the end of the 2024-25 season, but last December it entered into a strategic partnership with fellow German broadcaster RTL in order to reach a wider audience.

Under this two-year agreement, one game per week from EPL will be shown on RTL, and seven races per season from Formula1 will be aired through till end of year 2025.

This collaboration not only enhances viewer experience but also allows both broadcasters to leverage their respective platforms for increased visibility and reach among sports fans across Germany.

The extension of the media rights agreement between Sky Deutschland and EPL is a significant development for sports broadcasting in Germany. It ensures that fans will continue to have access to all Premier League games, while also strengthening Sky's position as a leading broadcaster in the country. The strategic partnership with RTL further diversifies the viewing options available to sports fans, making it an exciting time for both soccer and motor racing enthusiasts across Germany.
