Saudi Arabia’s top-flight football league will soon start to air on FOX, as FOX Sports has secured the US media rights to the Saudi Pro League.
The deal has been made for the upcoming season, which started on Friday 11 and lasts through May 2024. One of the key points of the deal is it includes both English and Spanish broadcasts.
The deal took some time as there were several broadcasters in the United States that showed intent to secure the deal as a two-year deal. However, Fox Sports and Fox Deportes eventually prevailed.
The grand plan of the Saudi Pro League
After Cristiano Ronaldo joined Al-Nassr, the Saudi Pro League started getting much more attention and value on the world stage. The growth of the Saudi Pro League is an important part of the long-term project for the Kingdom, initiated by the Saudi government.
The Saudi Pro League is passionately working towards Saudi Vision 2030. It is the most crucial program running in Saudi Arabia and aims to boost its economy and build a vibrant economy on a world level.
Elsewhere, DAZN owns the media rights for the UK, Germany and Austria, while Canal+ has broadcasting rights in France and Africa.
Stars flock to the Saudi Pro League
Before Lionel Messi joined Inter Miami, Saudi club Al-Hilal offered the Argentine superstar a multi-year deal worth more than $1 billion, but he chose Major League Soccer over Saudi Arabia. Al-Hilal also made an offer to Kylian Mbappe totalling $776 million for one year, but it’s highly anticipated that the French striker wants to join Real Madrid.
Along with Ronaldo and Benzema, the Saudi Pro League has numerous former Premier League star footballers, including Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane, Riyad Mahrez, Jordan Henderson, Ruben Neves, and N’Golo Kante. It also features Brazilian footballers like Alex Telles and Malcom, who joined the league this summer.
However, it is true that Saudi Arabia is facing a number of allegations and controversies for such a giant investment in football, potentially taking attention away from its human rights controversies.
