Preview: San Marino vs Northern Ireland

This promises to be an interesting game in itself. San Marino will start as the underdogs in this match-up. The hosts will be chasing their first victory since 2004 and it must be mentioned that they have not managed to score against a European nation for 12 months. Their last goal came against Lithuania in a 2-1 loss at home. Since then, they have managed to concede nine goals against Estonia and Malta in the Nations League while being unable to find the back of the net across the four games. Now, they find themselves going up against a vulnerable Northern Ireland in what could potentially be their best chance of recording their greatest result in the last 19 years. These two sides have previously faced off four times with Northern Ireland taking home the spoils on each occasion by a healthy 3-0 or a 4-0 margin.

Michael O'Neill will be hoping to win his 73rd game in charge of the Green and White Army, across his two stints. The former Stoke City boss has been handed a contract until 2028 and has been tasked with overseeing a long-term project in Northern Ireland. That being said, his side does start as the favorite to win this tie but with only six wins from their last 28 international fixtures, Northern Ireland could potentially find themselves in a vulnerable position. They have only managed to record a solitary win in their last six outings but as the saying goes, each game is a new one and so must be treated like one. O'Neill will be looking to kick-start his second stint with Northern Ireland with a victory against a side that is chasing its first victory in 19 years.

Prediction: San Marino vs Northern Ireland

While San Marino are expected to struggle, one cannot expect Northern Ireland to dominate the game entirely. With the side potentially low on confidence and struggling for momentum, they will tip-toe their way to a modest 1-0 win.
