Roberto De Zerbi, the new Tottenham Hotspur manager, has dismissed claims that his decision to join the club was primarily motivated by financial gain. He has pledged to swiftly enhance the mindset of his team in an effort to avoid a disastrous relegation from the Premier League.
Tottenham is set to face Sunderland this Sunday without having secured a Premier League victory since 2026. The team finds itself in a precarious position, battling against its first potential relegation in nearly half a century.
Following Thomas Frank's dismissal on February 11th, Tottenham initially approached De Zerbi as their preferred choice for replacement. However, due to complications arising from his departure from Marseille during the same week, they were unsuccessful in securing him as their new manager. Consequently, they opted for an interim solution with Igor Tudor at the helm.
Unfortunately, this proved to be an ill-fated decision as Tudor lost five out of seven matches before mutually agreeing to depart on March 29th. This time around though, when Spurs sent out another SOS call amidst threats of finishing within the bottom three teams of the league table; De Zerbi answered affirmatively.
No relegation release clause
Interestingly enough, there is no relegation release clause included in De Zerbi's hefty five-year contract with Tottenham - a fact that led many observers and fans alike questioning if money was indeed a significant factor behind his agreement to take over at such critical juncture.
However, dismissing these speculations outrightly during recent interactions with media personnel; he emphasized that monetary considerations were not major factors influencing his decision-making process while accepting this challenging role at Tottenham Hotspur Football Club.
Roberto De Zerbi, Tottenham manager, said:
“No. You can find the right answer in my history because I left a lot of money in my life and the money never changed my focus on my work. Marseille was a special place. I didn’t say goodbye yet to my former fans, my former club, because I didn’t want to make any polemic. And in that moment, it was good to stay at home.
“For me, it’s not a problem this situation for Tottenham. When you come in this club, you have not to decide depending on the situation in that moment. You have to have a longer vision. Now, the focus is on this season, these seven games, to keep (in) the Premier League.”
As Roberto De Zerbi takes the reins at Tottenham, he faces a daunting task of turning around the team's fortunes and steering them away from the threat of relegation. His commitment to improving the squad's mentality and his dismissal of financial motivations suggest that he is ready to face this challenge head-on. Only time will tell if his efforts will bear fruit and help Tottenham regain its lost glory in Premier League football.
