Referee Chris Kavanagh and his assistant Nick Greenhalgh have been sidelined for the upcoming Premier League game this weekend. The decision comes in the wake of their controversial officiating during the fourth round FA Cup fixture between Aston Villa and Newcastle United.
The pair faced heavy criticism for their decisions during Saturday's match, which did not feature a video assistant referee (VAR). VAR will only be introduced from the fifth round onwards. Amongst several contentious calls, Kavanagh and Greenhalgh overlooked a clear offside against Tammy Abraham that led to Villa's opening goal.
Further errors included missing a potential red card for Lucas Digne following a challenge on Jacob Murphy, as well as an alleged offside by Dan Burn leading up to Newcastle's equalising goal.
Digne non-penalty decision
However, it was the non-penalty decision involving Digne that left most spectators dumbfounded. Despite being two yards inside the penalty area when penalised for handball, Kavanagh and Greenhalgh ruled that the offence occurred outside of it. Consequently, they awarded a free-kick instead of a penalty - from which Newcastle's Sandro Tonali scored an equaliser in the 63rd minute.
Wayne Rooney expressed his disbelief on Match of The Day stating it was "one of the worst decisions I have ever seen".
The Professional Game Match Officials (PGMO), responsible for selecting referees, bases its choices on factors such as post-match performance assessments conducted by an independent Key Match Incidents panel. This ensures accountability among officials while maintaining high standards within professional football refereeing.
Despite recent criticisms, Kavanagh is highly regarded within football circles. In December he was promoted to UEFA’s elite list of referees, joining the ranks of Michael Oliver and Anthony Taylor. In other news, Gary Beswick, the other assistant at Villa Park during the controversial match, has been appointed to officiate in the Nottingham Forest versus Liverpool game on Sunday. This demonstrates that while mistakes are taken seriously, they do not necessarily spell an end to a referee's career.
