Manchester City manager, Pep Guardiola, has announced the return of two key centre-backs to training ahead of their crucial Premier League game against Liverpool. This comes as a significant boost for the team as they prepare to face one of their toughest opponents.
John Stones and Ruben Dias have both made progress this week, enhancing Manchester City's defensive options. Dias has been out for a month due to an injury sustained during a Premier League draw with Chelsea. Meanwhile, Stones hasn't played since early December due to an extended absence.
The England international's frustrating absence led to the signing of Marc Guehi in the winter transfer window, primarily because of their lack in availability for that position. However, with these two defenders back in training, it seems like Manchester City is gearing up for its upcoming match.
Dias pushing for a start at Anfield
Dias returned to training on Monday after travelling down with the squad for their game at Tottenham. He was also back in the squad for the Carabao Cup game against Newcastle. His potential return at Anfield on Sunday could be pivotal as Guardiola seeks his leadership at the back.
On another positive note, Stones has also resumed training this week. However, according to Guardiola, he needs more time to build up his fitness before he can participate fully in matches again.
Pep Guardiola, Manchester City manager, said:
"He's back, we will see if he plays minutes but it is good news for us. John yesterday made the first training session with the team so he is step by step coming back,"
While there is good news regarding some players' recovery status', Bernardo Silva remains doubtful ahead of Sunday’s clash against Liverpool following his absence from midweek cup tie due to injury concerns.
As things stand now, Manchester City could find themselves nine points behind Arsenal when they kick off at Anfield - a ground where Guardiola has only enjoyed one victory during his ten years at the Etihad. Premier League leaders Arsenal play at home to Sunderland on Saturday and could potentially stretch their six-point lead. The return of John Stones and Ruben Dias is a significant boost for Manchester City as they prepare for their upcoming match against Liverpool. However, with Bernardo Silva's status still uncertain, it remains to be seen how Guardiola will strategize his team's approach in this crucial game.
