The drama escalated when a late penalty was awarded by Spanish referee Jesus Gil Manzano after a VAR review

Manchester City manager, Pep Guardiola, expressed his frustration after a controversial late penalty decision cost his team two crucial points in their recent Champions League match against Monaco. The incident has sparked a heated debate about the role of referees in football matches and the use of Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology.

In an intense encounter, Manchester City was held to a 2-2 draw by Monaco. The drama unfolded when Spanish referee Jesus Gil Manzano awarded a late penalty following a VAR review. Nico Gonzalez was judged to have made high contact with Eric Dier inside the box, leading to this decisive moment. The decision led to chaos on the sidelines as tensions boiled over between both benches resulting in red cards being shown. This incident has once again brought into focus the ongoing debate about refereeing standards and decisions in European football.

Guardiola did not hold back his disappointment after the final whistle blew. Although he refrained from commenting directly on the referee's decision, he took an indirect swipe at 'Spanish referees'. His comments reflect growing concerns among many managers and players about perceived inconsistencies and errors in officiating that can significantly impact match outcomes.

Pep Guardiola, Manchester City manager, said:

“Nothing to say to Spanish referees,. We played a really good game. Of course, we were close but at the end we could not defend the free-kick well and we conceded the penalty. In football you have to win with the result. If you analyse the game there were many things that were good. Step by step we will be better but we had many chances and many players played really good. We conceded almost nothing.”

Haaland’s brace leads to draw

Despite dominating for large parts of the game and hitting the crossbar twice, Manchester City had to settle for just one point due to this contentious call. Striker Erling Haaland’s impressive brace was overshadowed by this controversy as he left the pitch furious after full-time whistle.

This result extends Manchester City’s wait for an away win in Europe; their last victory came exactly one year ago. It underscores how even dominant performances can be undone by single controversial decisions - adding fuel to the ongoing discussions about refereeing in football.

This incident has not only stirred up controversy but also highlighted the significant impact that refereeing decisions can have on match outcomes. As debates around VAR and officiating standards continue, it's clear that these issues are far from resolved. For now, teams like Manchester City must grapple with these challenges as they strive for success in Europe's top football competition.
