Live English Premier League (EPL) matches will soon be available on virtual reality (VR) headsets thanks to a new partnership between NBC and Meta.
The deal will see NBC’s streaming service, Peacock, join Meta’s VR platform, Quest, allowing customers to immerse themselves in new virtual worlds.
The three-year partnership between NBC and Meta will take Peacock to Meta Quest 2 and Quest Pro.
In addition to EPL matches, fans will be able to enjoy Major League Baseball (MLB), WWE, NASCAR, IndyCar and Big Ten college sports as part of the VR package.
Meta also plans to take some of Peacock’s other content into the VR world, with TV shows and films being shown on ‘a giant personal screen’.
Annie Luo, executive vice president, head of global partnerships and strategic development at Peacock, said:
“Launching Peacock on Meta Quest 2 and Meta Quest Pro meaningfully expands the existing partnership between Meta and NBCUniversal and offers users more opportunities to experience Peacock’s robust content offering in an immersive VR and streaming experience.
“Whether it be a VR experience with ‘The Office’ or an iconic film franchise, a live sporting event or the next breakout Peacock original, there’s something for everyone.”
It is worth noting that Meta already has similar streaming deals with the likes of Amazon Prime Video, ESPN, Pluto TV and YouTube, while the company has cut the prices of its VR headsets in an attempt to attract more customers.
Given that Peacock had more than 20 million paid subscribers at the end of 2022 – more than doubling from nine million in 2021 – the new deal between NBC and Meta looks set to be hugely beneficial for both parties.
