Arsenal boss, Mikel Arteta, has recently disclosed that two of his key players, Mohamed Elneny and Reiss Nelson, sustained injuries during their recent match against PSV Eindhoven. The Gunners were held to a 1-1 draw in Holland yesterday. Despite the game being inconsequential for Arsenal as they had already secured their Champions League group win, the loss of two players due to injuries is an unfortunate setback.
Arteta made several changes to his team last night with Reiss Nelson, Mohamed Elneny and Cedric Soares all getting a start. Although the Gunners weren't at their best form, they managed to take the lead after an impressive run from Nelson followed by a superb finish by Eddie Nketiah.
However, an error by William Saliba gave PSV a chance back into the game in the second half. Despite having numerous opportunities to secure victory, Arsenal failed to capitalize on them.
It was a dead rubber match for Arsenal, but injuries to Nelson and Elneny could affect their fortunes in the future
While the result doesn't significantly impact Arsenal's standing in Champions League play-offs; seeing Elneny hobble off with what seemed like a hamstring injury was disheartening for both fans and teammates alike.
Adding salt to wound was Arteta's revelation that Reiss Nelson also 'felt something' during last night’s match which could potentially indicate another injury concern for Arsenal while speaking to TNT Sports post-match interview.
Arsenal manager, Mikel Arteta, said:
“It’s a shame on Mo as well because he felt something, Reiss as well.”
The match against PSV marked only third start of this season for 24-year-old winger Reiss Nelson - his first ever in Champions League. Despite limited opportunities so far this season; he demonstrated why he is considered one of football’s rising stars with his performance last night before being substituted due to discomfort.
Nelson had 69 touches on ball during game time; won 12 duels, completed five take-ons, made four tackles and created two chances. One of these opportunities was converted into a goal by his teammate Nketiah.
The injuries to Elneny and Nelson are indeed unfortunate for Arsenal. However, fans are hopeful that Nelson's discomfort is just a minor knock and he will be fit to play in the upcoming game against Brighton this weekend.
While the draw against PSV may not have had any bearing on Arsenal’s Champions League table position; it has certainly left them with some injury concerns. As they move forward in their campaign, managing player fitness will be crucial for Arteta and his team.
