Mediaset España, the Spanish division of the Italy-based broadcasting group, has successfully secured a sublicensing deal with global streaming service DAZN. This agreement allows Mediaset to broadcast men's soccer’s revamped Club World Cup (CWC) club competition in 2025.
Under this agreement, Mediaset will provide live free-to-air coverage of one fixture per day during the US-based tournament across Spain. This arrangement mirrors a similar deal that the broadcaster recently struck in Italy.
The CWC is set to commence on June 14, 2025, at Miami's Hard Rock Stadium and will feature top-tier clubs from around the globe. The tournament will consist of 63 matches over a span of 29 days and include representation from La Liga clubs Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid.
New format for CWC
The forthcoming CWC introduces an innovative format where continental governing bodies receive multiple team slots excluding only the Oceania Football Confederation (OFC). Europe’s UEFA leads with twelve teams including Chelsea, Manchester City, Bayern Munich, PSG, Juventus, Inter Milan among others.
Davide Mondo, chief executive of Publiespaña, Mediaset España, said:
“At Publiespaña, we are very proud to be part of this collaboration with DAZN, a great opportunity to connect with large audiences. We estimate a reach of more than 25 million viewers in Spain alone.
“This alliance between a broadcaster and a streamer will amplify the visibility of the Club World Cup and will mark a turning point in the history of club football, not only because of the caliber of the teams participating, but also because of the relevance and opportunity we will offer our advertisers.”
DAZN had previously secured exclusive global rights to broadcast all games of CWC last December at an estimated cost around $1 billion. However, it has also agreed sublicensing deals in key markets recently to recover some part of its substantial investment.
Other sublicensing deals
Earlier this month TNT Sports network signed a deal with DAZN to show 24 games across the US marking it as their second tie-up following an agreement with TelevisaUnivision - a Spanish language media group - which plans to air 18 matches across its Univision platforms.
In addition last month saw MBC Group – Saudi-owned FTA broadcaster – secure Egyptian sub-licensing rights for the tournament. Iris Sport Media agency also managed to secure distribution rights across sub-Saharan Africa.
The sublicensing deal between Mediaset España and DAZN marks a significant step in ensuring widespread coverage of the CWC 2025. With the inclusion of top clubs from around the world, this tournament promises to be an exciting event for sports fans and sports betting enthusiasts alike.
