United have many midfielders on their wishlist for the summer

Manchester United, the renowned Premier League club, is reportedly keeping a close eye on Real Sociedad's midfielder Mikel Merino. The Spanish player, who previously played for Newcastle, has attracted attention from several top-tier clubs due to his impressive performance and nearing contract end.

Merino's current contract with Real Sociedad includes a €60m (£51m) release clause. However, it is speculated that the club might be willing to negotiate a deal below this amount. This potential bargain has piqued the interest of not only Manchester United but also other prominent clubs like Manchester City, Atletico Madrid and Juventus.

With rumours swirling about Casemiro potentially being sold to a Saudi Pro League club this summer, Manchester United may need to find another holding midfielder. Merino could fit the bill perfectly given his reputation for regaining ball possession and his commendable skills in possession too. His stats speak volumes about his capabilities - he has scored 6 goals and provided 5 assists for Sociedad in the current season alone.

The Red Devils are looking to raid Real Sociedad in summer

In addition to Merino, reports suggest that Erik ten Hag’s side are also monitoring three other players from Real Sociedad squad: Takefusa Kubo, Martin Zubimendi and Robin Le Normand.

It would be difficult to secure Martin Zubimendi at Old Trafford because he is also being targeted by Arsenal. He is an attack-minded midfielder who could complement or replace Merino. It has been rumored that Takefusa Kubo would move to several English clubs recently, but Real Madrid's buyback clause would have to be avoided.

Manchester United is unlikely to prioritize Robin Le Normand despite the need for reinforcements at centre-half. Jarrad Branthwaite at Everton, Antonio Silva at Benfica and Marc Guehi at Crystal Palace are other players that are considered more attractive.

As the end of the season approaches, it's clear that Manchester United is actively scouting for new talent to bolster their squad. Mikel Merino, with his impressive skills and potential availability at a lower price than his release clause, seems to be a prime target. However, with other top clubs also showing interest in him and other Sociedad players on United's radar being pursued by rival teams, it remains to be seen how these transfer scenarios will unfold.
