Liverpool has reportedly joined Barcelona in the race to sign highly-regarded Swedish winger, Momodou Sonko. The 18-year-old prodigy is attracting attention from a host of European sides, with both Liverpool and Barcelona closely monitoring his progress.
Sonko has been a revelation for his club, BK Hacken in Sweden. With 44 senior appearances under his belt, he has scored 14 goals and provided eight assists. His performance on the field has not only caught the eye of top-tier clubs but also earned him caps at under-17 and under-19 level for Sweden. Although he's yet to make his senior debut for the country, he's already been called up to the national team.
Sonko is most comfortable as an inside forward on the left flank but shows versatility by also being capable of playing on the right flank as well as up front as a number nine. This flexibility could be an added advantage for any club looking to sign him.
Jurgen Klopp has been keeping a close eye on Sonko personally
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp's side are leading this chase having already registered their admiration for Sonko. As reported by Barca Universal, Liverpool have officially expressed their interest in this young talent although they are yet to make an offer.
Despite having plenty of firepower on their flanks with players like Luis Diaz, Cody Gakpo, Diogo Jota, and Darwin Nunez particularly on the left side; signing Sonko could prove beneficial in strengthening their squad depth over time.
Barcelona could potentially benefit from adding another left winger if they fail to secure Joao Felix permanently following his loan spell from Atletico Madrid. While they do have Ferran Torres operating from that position currently; he isn't considered an indispensable asset. Signing Sonko could provide them with a promising option for the future.
Many clubs are monitoring the situation closely
Apart from Barcelona and Liverpool, Dutch Eredivisie club Ajax are also reportedly keen on signing this teenage sensation. However, it's clear that Sonko's talent has sparked a race among Europe’s elite clubs.
Momodou Sonko is certainly a player to watch out for in the coming years. His potential move to either Liverpool or Barcelona will not only be a significant step in his career but also add an exciting prospect to these clubs' rosters.
