Spain's top-tier soccer league, LaLiga, has been steadily strengthening its relationship with the Saudi Pro League (SPL) over recent months. This article explores the key developments in this partnership and their implications for both leagues.
In a significant move, LaLiga has opened a workspace within the Saudi Pro League headquarters in Riyadh. This new workspace is designed for use by both Spanish and SPL teams and was officially inaugurated on December 2. Furthermore, LaLiga announced that a league delegate will soon be based in Riyadh to further strengthen ties between the two competitions.
The existing ties between LaLiga and the SPL were further solidified when they announced a three-season partnership with Riyadh Season - an influential sporting, cultural, and entertainment brand - in October. The deal makes Riyadh Season an official commercial sponsor of LaLiga for three seasons spanning from 2024-25 to 2026-27. Last season also saw Visit Saudi becoming a sponsor of LaLiga in a deal valued by GlobalData at around $22 million for one year.
Spanish Super Cup stays in Saudi Arabia
Adding to these developments is the fact that last three editions of Spanish Super Cup have taken place in Saudi Arabia. Although run by the Spanish soccer federation rather than directly by La Liga itself, this event has contributed significantly to strengthening relations between Spain's top-tier football league and its counterpart in Saudi Arabia. A deal is reportedly underway to keep this four-team mini-competition within Kingdom through till 2029 edition.
La Liga president Javier Tebas commented on these developments highlighting how they contribute towards expanding their international presence which currently spans across 34 countries with 11 global offices.
La Liga president, Javier Tebas, said:
"This workspace marks a new chapter in our relationship with the region and the SPL, and we are confident that this partnership will pave the way for exciting new projects.”
these developments signify a strengthening relationship between LaLiga and SPL that not only benefits both leagues but also contributes towards expanding their international presence. With more collaborations expected to come into play soon, it will be interesting to see how this partnership evolves over time.
