The managerial position at Ipswich is up for grabs, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Gary O'Neil emerging as the leading candidates. The club's search for a new head coach comes in the wake of Kieran McKenna's recent departure.
Former Manchester United boss, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, is high on Ipswich's list to succeed McKenna. After leaving Manchester United in 2021, he took a break from management but expressed interest in making a quick return following his exit from Besiktas last summer.
Despite being overlooked for a return to Old Trafford last season - with the club opting instead for Michael Carrick - Solskjaer remains an attractive prospect due to his previous experience and success. Notably, he led Manchester United to second place in the Premier League table during the 2020-21 season while working alongside Martyn Pert and Kieran McKenna.
Longtime favourite
BBC Sport reported earlier this month that Gary O'Neil was also under consideration by Ipswich. Currently managing Strasbourg, O’Neil has long been admired by Ipswich’s hierarchy due to his impressive track record.
O’Neil’s connection with current Ipswich chief executive Mark Ashton dates back to their time together at Bristol City. Despite Strasbourg's confidence in retaining him after joining them this January, he remains a strong contender for the Tractor Boys.
Ipswich is looking for someone who can fill big shoes left by former head coach Kieran McKenna who stepped down last week despite leading them back into Premier League contention by finishing second in Championship last season.
McKenna had an impressive run with Tractor Boys, guiding them to three promotions in the past four seasons, two of which catapulted the club into top-flight football. His decision to step down was linked with a desire for a break from the game and to spend more time with his family. The race for Ipswich's managerial position is heating up, with Solskjaer and O'Neil leading the pack. Both candidates bring their unique strengths and experiences to the table. As sports fans eagerly await an announcement, it's clear that whoever takes over will have big shoes to fill following McKenna’s successful tenure.
