Those eagerly awaited BCCI media rights are now expected to finally be sorted out. The secretary of the Board of Cricket Control in India has disclosed that a deal will be done by July and tenders will be issued to interested broadcasters soon thereafter.
Due to the fact that the deal is set to be finalized by July, the BCCI is looking to onboard a temporary broadcaster for India's series against Afghanistan in June and WTC final, as Disney Star's contract with Indian cricket ended in March.
Jay Shah, Secretary of BCCI recently said:
"The BCCI Media Rights tender will be on schedule this year (June-July) and will depend on the Afghanistan tour, but more likely the process will start from the Australia series. The Board will speak to all stakeholders concerned and will come up with an interim decision,"
Disney Star, Sony-Zee and Viacom are set to battle each other again
The tough battle for the biggest media rights in world cricket will officially get underway at the end of IPL 16 as the tendering process will take at least 45 days as the guidelines make the race for media rights even more eye-watering.
The fierce competition between media houses was evident during the previous media rights sale of the Indian Premier League, so it is likely that this will continue.
Despite the fact that Disney Star is seeking to retain its rights, emerging houses such as Sony, and Viacom are hoping to have some luck this time.
The Indian Cricket's media deal is estimated to be on course to reach the same record level of $6.2 billion that IPL's deal reached last year.
It is likely to be mediated by KPMG, who was the mastermind behind the sale of IPL last year and has again been approached to handle BCCI's contract.
