Former Manchester United star, Gary Neville, has recently opened up about his relationship with his younger brother Phil. In a surprising revelation, he admitted that the pair have not seen each other in "well over a year". This comes as a result of Phil's commitment to managing Major League Soccer (MLS) side Portland Timbers in America.
The Neville brothers share an illustrious history together. They both came through the ranks at the Manchester United academy and were part of the legendary 'Class of '92'. This group also included football greats such as David Beckham, Paul Scholes, Ryan Giggs and Nicky Butt. Their journey did not stop there; they continued to work together during Gary's stint in charge of Valencia where Phil served as his assistant.
Shared business ventures
Beyond their shared passion for football, the brothers also co-own several business ventures. These include a hotel and university along with League Two club Salford City which they own alongside some of their former teammates from Manchester United. Despite these shared interests and ventures however, it seems distance has taken its toll on their personal relationship.
Gary Neville, Manchester United legend, said:
"I've not seen Phil in ages, I've not seen him for well over a year now. We text sometimes, we don't speak that often but that's really more me.
"My brother will ring my mum every day, will ring my sister and text her whereas I'm a bit more [distant]. I need to book a week over in Portland."
Impact of distance
Phil's coaching career in America over the last four years has led to him spending less time with family back home in England. As he is currently busy managing MLS side Portland Timbers across the pond, this has resulted in him being physically distant from his elder brother for more than a year now.
Gary’s recent admission about this ‘distant’ bond sheds light on how professional commitments can often lead to personal sacrifices - even when it comes to family ties among famous sporting siblings like the Nevilles.
While both brothers continue to excel professionally – one making strides in American soccer management and another juggling multiple business interests – it is clear that maintaining close familial bonds can be challenging amidst such demanding schedules. Despite the physical distance, the shared history, mutual respect and common interests between Gary and Phil Neville are undeniable.
