Neville referred to Wirtz as a 'little boy' following his subpar performance in Liverpool's disappointing defeat against Manchester City

In the world of football, criticism is as common as the game itself. Recently, Florian Wirtz, a young attacking midfielder for Liverpool, has found himself in the crosshairs of critics. However, his father Hans Wirtz has come forward to defend his son and offer an alternative perspective on his performance.

When Liverpool agreed to a club-record £116 million ($152.6 million) fee to bring Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen over the summer, expectations were high among fans and pundits alike. Many anticipated that this diminutive playmaker would quickly make his mark in England’s top flight league. However, by mid-November, Wirtz was still waiting for his first Premier League goal or assist. Despite teeing up Hugo Ekitiké in the Community Shield and creating two goals against Eintracht Frankfurt in the Champions League on an otherwise understated debut season with Liverpool.

Former Manchester United fullback Gary Neville did not hold back when discussing Wirtz’s performance after Liverpool suffered a 3–0 defeat to Manchester City last weekend. “Wirtz is a problem,” said Neville bluntly during post-match analysis. He further added that he thought "Wirtz looked like a little boy," implying that he lacked physicality and maturity necessary for England's top-flight football.

Hans Wirtz Hits back

Florian’s father Hans dismissed these criticisms outrightly stating that “everything is going as expected.” Speaking with Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger he said: “I only take criticism from former internationals in passing.” He emphasized that Florian is still very young and adjusting to new surroundings while trying to prove himself at one of Europe's biggest clubs.

Hans Wirtz, Florian Wirtz’s father, said:

“So far, everything is going as expected; it’s a completely normal settling-in process, entirely independent of any transfer fee. And: If you look at the statistics more closely, you can see that Florian’s stats regarding his involvement in the game are already quite good; only assists and goals are still pending.”

Hans also pointed out that less than a third of the season has been played, suggesting that it's too early to judge his son's performance. He believes that Florian’s struggles are part of a larger process of adaptation and growth.

Florian Wirtz’s journey at Liverpool is still in its early stages. While critics like Gary Neville may be quick to point out his shortcomings, it is important to remember that he is a young player adapting to a new environment and league. As Hans Wirtz rightly pointed out, less than a third of the season has passed, and there is still plenty of time for Florian Wirtz to prove himself on the Premier League stage. For sports fans and sports betting enthusiasts alike, this serves as an important reminder: patience can often yield surprising results in football.
