DAZN aim to end the 3PM blackout in EFL games

The blackout rule, which has been in place since 1960 is basically to promote the EFL viewer to watch their team play live rather than on television. That being said, Sky Sports currently hold the TV rights for EFL games and broadcast only 138 of a total of 1671 games.

Now, DAZN are looking to take over the EFL rights from Sky Sports with the asking fee for the rights set at £200m-a-year in comparison to the £119 million that Sky currently dishes out every year.

The British Sports Media company, if manages to take over the TV rights from Sky, will succeed in revolutionizing the way football is viewed in the United Kingdom because their plan is to stop the viewer from resorting to illegal streaming services.

Only 20 League one and 10 League two fixtures were broadcasted by Sky last season and only a total of 26 teams were able to make it to the Television sets. This is exactly what DAZN are looking to change.

DAZN, who claim to be the biggest largest sports broadcaster in Europe, announced plans for worldwide expansion in 2020.

The blackout rule is being viewed as something that is outdated and something that is not appropriate to the current times. As of now, Sky Sports, BT Sport, Viaplay, and DAZN are all in the race to secure the deal but DAZN are considered to be the frontrunner in the race.

When it comes to the Premier League rights though, Sky Sports are leading the race for the 2025-2028 cycle.
