Sports streaming giant, DAZN, has successfully secured exclusive rights to broadcast the next three seasons of Italian soccer's top-tier Serie A in Spain. This significant deal marks a shift in the broadcasting landscape and adds another feather to DAZN's cap.
The deal, which commences from the start of 2024-25 next month and runs through 2026-27, sees DAZN replace pay-TV’s Movistar Plus (owned by Telefonica) as the Spanish broadcaster for Serie A matches. This change comes after a series of international rights tenders that have been taking place since mid-2023.
Serie A has substantially changed its method for selling media rights across this new cycle. Previously, most rights were held by the Infront agency. However, now the league is conducting a sizeable proportion of negotiations directly with broadcasters. Despite this shift, Infront continues to distribute rights across Asia-Pacific.
DAZN now a football platform
This latest tie-up adds to recently unveiled extensions in other markets such as UK (TNT Sports) and US (CBS). It also includes Serie A highlights, coverage of Coppa Italia knockout competition and Italian Super Cup match.
DAZN Espana's acquisition further enhances its soccer portfolio that already includes domestic coverage of LaLiga (jointly with Movistar until 2027) and England’s Premier League matches. Beyond football broadcasts, it also airs motorsport’s Formula 1 and MotoGP events.
In addition to these international deals, DAZN holds joint domestic broadcasting rights for Serie A alongside Sky Italia until 2028-29 season.
Serie A fanbase in Spain
The new agreement will be particularly relevant for Spanish players currently contracted to Serie A clubs including Pedro at Lazio; Monza’s Pablo Mari; and Álex Jiménez at AC Milan. Their games will now be more accessible to their home fans, potentially boosting their popularity and fan base.
The acquisition of Serie A broadcasting rights by DAZN in Spain signifies a new era in sports streaming. It not only expands DAZN's impressive portfolio but also provides Spanish soccer fans with increased access to top-tier Italian football. As the new season gets underway on August 17, all eyes will be on how this change impacts the viewing experience for sports fans and bettors alike.
