Chelsea Football Club is gearing up for a significant squad transformation this summer. The Blues are reportedly planning to sell as many as eight players during the upcoming transfer window, while also welcoming new signings into the fold.
Even before the transfer window opens, Chelsea has already secured two deals. Sporting CP's Portuguese duo Geovany Quenda and Dario Essugo have been signed by the club. Quenda will continue his stint in Lisbon next season, while Essugo is set to join Chelsea's squad which is bracing for substantial changes.
Players likely to exit
According to Fabrizio Romano, seven or eight players are expected to depart from Enzo Maresca's side this summer. Among those named in reports are Kepa Arrizabalaga and Axel Disasi.
Kepa hasn't played for Chelsea since May 2023 and it has been over two years since he last kept a clean sheet for the Blues. After an inconsistent spell with Real Madrid last term, Kepa has now established himself as Bournemouth's first-choice goalkeeper.
Disasi was seen wearing Chelsea’s captain armband as recently as December but joined Aston Villa on loan at the end of winter window. In just three weeks, he made four Premier League starts for Villa - equaling his total at Chelsea during the first six months of that season. It remains uncertain whether Bournemouth or Villa will sign these players permanently despite their successful loan spells so far.
Uncertain futures
Jadon Sancho’s future at Stamford Bridge seems less certain than previously thought. Additionally, both of Chelsea’s first-team goalkeepers Robert Sanchez and Filip Jorgensen could be offloaded following underwhelming campaigns this season. Enzo Fernandez is another player linked with a move away, but Chelsea seems determined to resist Real Madrid's reported interest.
Despite the planned exodus, it won't be a summer of sales only for the Blues. Maresca's side is targeting a new striker and winger to bolster an attack that remains heavily reliant on Cole Palmer. This comes after Chelsea has been outscored by 13th-placed Tottenham Hotspur in the top flight this season following a dip in form from their talismanic playmaker.
Chelsea fans can expect an exciting and busy summer transfer window as the club seeks to revamp its squad for better performance in upcoming seasons.
