Arsenal, the Premier League's current second-place team, is reportedly interested in signing Salernitana striker Boulaye Dia during the January transfer window. This news comes despite the Gunners' impressive season and their advancement into the Champions League knockout stage.
Despite their successful run this season, there are claims that Arsenal could benefit from some squad improvements. Specifically, they may be looking to add a new striker to their roster come January. Santos’ Marcos Leonardo has been heavily linked with a move to Arsenal in recent days; however, reports also suggest that Dia is also on the Gunners’ radar.
The Senegal international currently has a low release clause of €21 million in his contract. Interestingly enough, Salernonotizie suggests that Arsenal could potentially sign him for around €13m this winter with Charlie Patino moving to a Serie A club.
The 27-year-old has managed only four goals from nine league games and missed five matches due to injuries
Dia had an impressive run last season with 16 goals in Italy's top-flight league and played an instrumental role in helping Salernitana avoid relegation. However, his performance this year hasn't been as stellar as expected.
Given these circumstances and his injury-prone nature this term, it might be wise for Arsenal to reconsider pursuing him further as they can’t afford another striker with fitness issues.
Instead of focusing on Dia or Leonardo who lacks European football experience altogether, Stuttgart striker, Serhou Guirassy seems like a more viable option for Arsenal's hierarchy. He has been performing exceptionally well this season with 18 goals from just 14 appearances under his belt.
Guirassy also has a low release clause of €17.5m in his contract, making him a potentially better signing over Dia and Leonardo.
However, securing Guirassy won't be an easy task for Arsenal as they face stiff competition from Manchester United. Furthermore, the striker may demand assured starts which the Gunners may not be able to guarantee him.
While Arsenal's interest in Boulaye Dia indicates their intent to strengthen their squad further, it might be more beneficial for them to consider other options like Serhou Guirassy who could potentially offer more value and less risk.
