Arsenal Football Club has officially announced the appointment of Andrea Berta as their new sporting director. The former Atlético Madrid executive is set to replace Edu, who resigned in November to join a network of clubs led by Nottingham Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis.
Berta expressed his excitement about the new role and is expected to attend Arsenal's game against Fulham on Tuesday, marking the beginning of his tenure at the club. His appointment comes after an extensive recruitment process spearheaded by Richard Garlick, managing director, and Tim Lewis, executive vice-chair.
The decision was also influenced by consultations with co-chair Josh Kroenke and manager Mikel Arteta. The club believes that Berta’s impressive track record makes him an ideal fit for this crucial role.
Track record of success
During his 12-year stint at Atlético Madrid which ended in January this year, Berta was instrumental in several successful signings. These include Jan Oblak from Benfica for €4m in 2014 and Rodri from Villarreal for €25m in 2018.
Andrea Berta, Former Atlético Madrid Executive, said:
“I am thrilled to be joining Arsenal in what is a hugely exciting period for the club. I have watched with great interest the way Arsenal has evolved in recent years and I have admired the hard work that has gone in to reestablishing the club as a major force in European football with a passionate following around the world.
“The club has great values and a rich history, and I am looking forward to playing my part in shaping a successful future with a great team. I cannot wait to get started in my new role and I am really looking forward to experiencing my first game at Emirates Stadium together with our supporters.”
His ability to identify talent and negotiate successful deals played a significant part in persuading Arsenal that he was the right choice for their sporting director position.
Team building ahead
Jason Ayto will work alongside Berta as his assistant following a temporary stint filling Edu’s role since his departure. One of their immediate tasks involves signing a top-class centre forward due to season-ending injuries suffered by Gabriel Jesus and Kai Havertz. Newcastle striker Alexander Isak and Benjamin Sesko from RB Leipzig are understood to be primary targets as they look forward to strengthening their squad ahead of next season.
With Thomas Partey and Jorginho nearing contract expiration dates, Arsenal has already secured a €60m (£50.2m) deal for Real Sociedad midfielder Martín Zubimendi. The club also plans to bolster its left-back position.
In addition, Arsenal is keen on extending contracts of key players like Bukayo Saka and William Saliba, whose current deals expire in 2027. The appointment of Andrea Berta as Arsenal's new sporting director marks a new chapter for the club. His proven track record in talent acquisition and management will be instrumental in shaping the future of Arsenal Football Club.
