Liverpool manager Arne Slot has reportedly received an apology from representatives at Amazon Prime, following allegations that he attempted to influence the referee during a recent Premier League match.
During the 3-3 draw between Liverpool and Newcastle United, it was suggested by Prime Video presenter Dan Walker that Slot had entered the referee's dressing room in an attempt to sway his decisions. This claim was made during half-time coverage of the game, which saw Liverpool trailing 1-0 after Alexander Isak's opening goal for Newcastle.
However, it is now believed that this was a misunderstanding. Reports suggest that Slot merely spoke with referee Andy Madley in the tunnel as both teams headed back to their changing rooms for half time.
Apology issued
In light of these events, Amazon swiftly offered an apology to both Slot and Liverpool FC. They attributed this incident to a "production misunderstanding" which led to false claims being broadcasted. According to The Times, Liverpool have accepted this apology and consider the matter closed.
Despite trailing at half-time, Liverpool managed a comeback shortly after the break with Mohamed Salah scoring twice quickly turning around their fortunes. However, Fabian Schar's late equaliser meant they dropped points for only the third time this season ahead of their Merseyside derby against Everton on Saturday.
Upcoming challenges for Slot and Liverpool
The upcoming fixture against Everton is known for causing contentious issues over recent years - making it one of high anticipation among fans and players alike. Michael Oliver will be officiating at Goodison Park on Saturday hoping no decisions cause controversy post-match as seen in previous encounters between these two clubs.
Both clubs have felt wronged by referees' decisions in past fixtures including Jordan Pickford not being sent off for his tackle on Virgil van Dijk in the 2020-21 season, which ended the defender's season prematurely. Similarly, Everton felt aggrieved that Ibrahima Konate was not sent off for two tactical fouls in a game where Ashley Young received a red card for similar actions.
As Liverpool and Slot move forward from this incident, they will be hoping to avoid any further controversy and focus on their performance on the pitch.
