Gary Lineker, a renowned BBC pundit and host of Match of the Day, recently made headlines not for his sports commentary but for an unexpected incident that occurred on set. Known for his wit and humor, Lineker turned an accidental injury into a moment of levity by joking about his own death.

The incident took place during Saturday’s show when the discussion was centered around Arsenal's upcoming Champions League fixture against Real Madrid. The guests on the show were Alan Shearer and Danny Murphy who both agreed that Arsenal could face a tough challenge against the Spanish giants. This was especially considering star defender Gabriel's absence due to injury for the remainder of the season.

However, as Shearer and Murphy were engrossed in their analysis, an unfortunate off-screen event unfolded - Gary Lineker accidentally stabbed himself with a set prop.

Turning injury into laughter

Despite suffering from an unexpected injury, Lineker managed to maintain his composure and sense of humor. Through laughter, he abruptly announced: “Right, we’ve got to go - I’ve just stabbed myself on the tablet there. I’m bleeding! Before we go - before I die! - I’ll read the Premier League table to you.”

“Arsenal’s draw [with Everton] leaves Liverpool needing a maximum of 11 more points to clinch a record-equalling 20th top-flight title. Defeat for third-placed Nottingham Forest [against Aston Villa] allows Manchester City or Chelsea to move within striking distance when they play. Aston Villa climb to sixth.
“Our super-computer says Wolves are 99.9 per cent certain to stay up after their win which moves them 12 points ahead of Ipswich. The result also means that Southampton’s relegation will be confirmed if they lose to Tottenham.”

End of an era for Match Of The Day

Lineker has been at helm of Match Of The Day for nearly 26 years now but will be leaving at end of this Premier League season. However fans need not worry as he will continue presenting BBC’s coverage of other major football events such as FA Cup and 2026 World Cup.

At 64 years old, Gary is far from retiring from broadcasting world though; he hosts popular podcast "The Rest Is Football" alongside Alan Shearer and former Manchester City defender Micah Richards.
