Welsh club Wrexham continue to prove the darlings of American football watching, as fans learn that the lowly EFL League Two team will once again see one of its matches televised in the United States.
Wrexham's FA Cup second-round game is set to air on ESPN+ this December. The Welsh side will face off against Yeovil Town on Sunday, December 3rd, starting at 10:45 AM (ET).
Wrexham secured their place in the second round of the competition by defeating Mansfield Town earlier this month. The Red Dragons triumphed over their opponents with a 2-1 victory, thanks to goals by Sam Dalby and Paul Mullin. Yeovil, on the other hand, is preparing to face Wrexham after narrowly defeating National League club Gateshead on the same day.
Wrexham going from strength to strength under Hollywood owners
Hollywood actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney played a significant role in Wrexham's promotion to League Two in April. The Welsh club ascended to the English Football League (EFL) by winning the National League, marking their first league title in 45 years and their return to the EFL after a 15-year hiatus.
Despite experiencing some initial challenges in League Two, Wrexham managed to regain their footing. After winning only one of their first five league matches, the club has since climbed the ranks and currently sits second in the standings, having lost only one game in their last 12 fixtures.
The Welsh side's popularity in the United States has skyrocketed, largely due to the success of the FX show Welcome to Wrexham."The series, which debuted in August 2022, followed the Red Dragons' quest for promotion to League Two during the 2021/22 season. Despite falling short in the playoffs, the second season chronicled their title-winning campaign.
FX renews Welcome to Wrexham for another season
FX has recently announced the renewal of Welcome to Wrexham for a third season, following the recent conclusion of the second season.
Fans who missed the second season of Welcome to Wrexham can still catch up on the series via streaming services. The entire second season is currently available to stream on Hulu in the United States. For international viewers, Star+ handles streaming in Latin America, while Disney+ covers all other areas, including in the UK.
Nick Grad, President of Entertainment at FX, said:
“The wild global success of Welcome to Wrexham is a testament to the courage and vision of Rob and Ryan, the dogged spirit of the Red Dragons, and the hope and devotion of the people of Wrexham,”
“It’s a story that has only begun to be told and one that everyone can continue to follow along with in the third season. Our thanks to the creative team who captured these thrilling moments and everyone who achieved what seemed impossible only a short time ago.”
The next season of the series is expected to air in 2024, giving fans plenty of time to catch up on the Red Dragons' journey so far.
Wrexham fans around the world now have something to look forward to in the coming weeks, as their side look to make it into the FA Cup third-round draw.
