Switzerland forward, Breel Embolo, has experienced a delay in joining the rest of his team for the World Cup due to a review of his travel document. With 24 goals in 86 internationals, Embolo is an integral part of the Swiss squad. However, he was unable to accompany his teammates on their journey to the United States.
Embolo's travel document, known as the Electronic System for Travel Authorisation (ESTA), is currently under review. The ESTA is an automated system that determines whether visitors are eligible to travel to the US under its Visa Waiver Program.
The Swiss team departed from Zurich and arrived in Los Angeles on Tuesday before proceeding to their World Cup training camp located in San Diego. Their opening match in Group B against Qatar is scheduled for June 13th in San Francisco.
Switzerland Football Federation released statement:
“Unfortunately, Breel Embolo is currently unable to travel to the United States with the team. His ESTA authorisation had been approved until this morning. However, at 10:30 am [08:30 GMT], we were informed that his ESTA application had been placed under further review.
“We are currently in contact with the relevant authorities and expect that Breel will either join the team later today or travel tomorrow and join the squad then.”
Legal troubles back home
The delay comes after a Swiss court ruling linked Embolo with a 2018 altercation that took place in Basel. This verdict became final nine months ago when it was upheld on appeal after judges dismissed Embolo's account of the incident. Embolo, who plays as a striker for Stade Rennais, was convicted back in 2023 for making multiple threats and received a suspended fine as punishment. According to reports by Swiss media outlets back in April this year, Embolo decided not to take his case further up to Federal Court level which made this judgement final.
As one of Switzerland’s key players with an impressive international record so far, any delay or absence involving Breel could potentially impact their performance at this crucial stage - especially considering their opening match against Qatar is just around the corner. While it remains unclear how long this review process will take or what the outcome will be, sports fans and sports betting enthusiasts alike are eagerly awaiting updates on Embolo's situation. His presence or absence could significantly influence the dynamics of Switzerland's World Cup campaign.
This incident serves as a reminder that off-field issues can have significant implications for athletes and their teams. It also underscores the importance of legal compliance for international players who often need to travel across borders for their professional commitments.
