Multiple women have come forward accusing billionaire businessman and former West Ham co-owner, David Sullivan, of sexually exploitative and predatory behaviour. The allegations span decades, beginning in the 1980s, and involve seven women who were young models seeking work at Sullivan's Daily and Sunday Sport newspapers.
The women accuse Sullivan of abusing his power by pressuring them for sex during business meetings under the guise of advancing their careers. One woman alleges she felt forced to engage in sexual activity with him against her will.
Sullivan has categorically denied these claims which emerged during a joint investigation by BBC Panorama and the Times. He resigned as joint chair of West Ham shortly after learning about the impending publication of this investigation.
Powerful gatekeeper
In the 1980s and 90s, Sullivan was a significant figure for aspiring glamour models. Some women allege that he used this position to exploit them sexually under the promise of becoming regular features in his newspapers.
Two women claim they felt compelled to sleep with him out fear it would damage their future modelling careers if they didn't comply. Another woman recounts an incident where she found herself locked in a room with Sullivan after he propositioned her for sex; she was only allowed to leave after raising her voice. Most accusers wished to remain anonymous due to fears about potential repercussions from Sullivan.
Reporters have corroborated details from these accounts using diary entries, police records, interviews with friends and family members whom victims confided in over time. Eight separate disclosures about Sullivan's conduct have been made to either Met or Essex Police; however, no charges were ever filed against him as a result.
Questions raised about football authorities' knowledge
This investigation also raises questions regarding what football authorities knew about his behaviour given his prominent role within West Ham.
One of the victims, referred to as Florence, was introduced to Sullivan in 1999 during a business meeting at his home. She recalls being asked by Sullivan to "freshen up" in a bathroom, which she later understood meant stripping down to her underwear.
Florence's account is supported by her diary entries from that time, detailing her journey and initial impressions of Sullivan's opulent home and his casual attire. These allegations against David Sullivan paint a disturbing picture of power abuse within the modelling industry. The investigation continues as more women come forward with their experiences. It remains crucial for such issues to be addressed promptly and thoroughly for justice to be served.
