Vizrt, a leading provider of visual storytelling tools, recently revealed its significant role in the creation of the virtual studio used by the BBC for its coverage of UEFA Women’s Euro 2025. The studio was powered by Vizrt's advanced technology and Unreal Engine, providing an immersive experience for viewers.
The innovative virtual studio enabled BBC Sport to seamlessly blend live graphics with high-end virtual design in real-time. This groundbreaking approach built on the same extended reality (XR) infrastructure that was previously utilized during its coverage of the 2024 Olympics football games.
The design aimed to mirror the Swiss setting where the tournament took place. Presenters were virtually placed within a mountaintop pavilion overlooking Lake Lucerne, surrounded by sweeping alpine views, national flags fluttering in the breeze, and skies that shifted according to time.
Grounding coverage with XR technology
The use of XR technology helped ground coverage within Switzerland's look and feel while offering producers unparalleled flexibility through a fully virtual environment. This unique approach allowed for an engaging viewing experience that captured both local flavor and global appeal.
John Murphy, design director at BBC Sport, said:
“This wasn’t about adding technology for the sake of it. It was about using the tools we already have available to us to tell the story of the tournament in a way that was current, and reflective of where the tournament was being played. Fans are tuning in more than ever, and we aim to deliver the best possible coverage.”
A key feature was Vizrt's AI-driven Reality Connect tool which played a crucial role in placing presenters within this set. The tool generates accurate reflections, shadows, and lighting effects making it possible to create a realistic on-screen environment despite being entirely virtual.
This cutting-edge technology ensures seamless integration between real-world elements like presenters or props with their digital counterparts—resulting in an immersive viewer experience that feels authentic yet futuristic at once.
Creative direction led by Lightwell
Lightwell led creative direction alongside longtime collaborator Toby Kalitowski. They worked closely with BBC Sport to design a set that perfectly aligned with both tone and identity of the Women's Euro 2025 tournament.
The result was a visually stunning and engaging virtual studio that not only enhanced the viewer experience but also set a new standard for sports broadcasting.
Vizrt’s role in BBC’s Women’s Euro 2025 coverage showcases how advanced technology can revolutionize sports broadcasting. By blending live graphics with high-end virtual design, broadcasters can create immersive viewing experiences that capture the essence of sporting events while providing flexibility and creative freedom. As technology continues to evolve, it will be exciting to see how it shapes future sports coverage.
