Former Watford striker, Troy Deeney, has recently launched a scathing assessment of Marcus Rashford's performance at Manchester United. This comes amidst rumors that the Red Devils icon might be nearing a departure from the club.
Rashford became an icon for the Red Devils after rising through the youth ranks in 2016. He reached double figures of league goals in three consecutive seasons and gained plaudits off-field with his charity work. While turning out regularly for England, he also scooped up two FA Cups, two League Cups, and a Europa League trophy at Manchester United.
However, Rashford has struggled lately with only four goals in 15 Premier League matches this season and assisting once. This slump coincides with the Red Devils' descent into the lower half of the table.
Uncertain future at Old Trafford
With new boss Ruben Amorim set to overhaul Manchester United to put his stamp on it, doubts are being cast over Rashford's future at Old Trafford. Mail Sport exclusively revealed this week that club chiefs would listen to offers of £40 million for him.
Deeney believes that Portuguese manager Amorim is already 'fed up' with his player. He expressed regret over how Rashford’s career was heading in a negative direction but suggested he is still capable of making a difference in big matches.
Former Watford striker, Troy Deeney, said:
'I have to ask him: "Do you even want to do this? Do you want to play football?" I don't see a scenario in the next few months, or years, where he flips it on his head and all of a sudden comes good.
'Rashford looks like he is carrying the weight of the world on his shoulders. Everything is always everybody else's fault and his application stinks.'
Vicious cycle
Deeney pointed out an often-repeated cycle where Rashford’s form starts to fade as a manager’s tenure goes on. He accepted that some blame must be taken by United as they continue offering new contracts to their struggling star player despite his underperformance.
Troy Deeney added:
'We saw it on Thursday night, subbed off against Viktoria Plzen and already United boss Ruben Amorim looks fed up with him. Look, I've been there. It's not nice when that is happening.
'As a striker you want to be left on to build some momentum, but I was at the Emirates when he came on against Arsenal last week. He was a disgrace. Amorim summed it up best when he joined, telling Rashford he will get full support but it is up to him as a player, a person.'
This criticism follows Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher's comments stating that Rashford was not performing to a level which justifies his salary amounting to 11 goals in 48 Premier League matches in the last year and a half, which he deemed as 'not good enough'. Rashford's future at Manchester United remains uncertain amidst criticism from former players and pundits. Despite his past successes, his recent form has been a cause for concern. Whether Rashford can turn things around or if he will be part of Amorim's overhaul remains to be seen.
