Spurs will offer Son a lucrative contract extension as he enters his final year

Tottenham Hotspur have made a strategic decision to extend the contract of their club captain, Son Heung-min, ahead of its final year. The move virtually eliminates the possibility of Son leaving the club in the upcoming summer.

Son Heung-min's existing contract with Tottenham was set to run until 2025. However, with an option for a 12-month extension in place, it appears that this deal will now be extended until 2026. This means that his new contract expiration date will fall just a week before his 34th birthday.

The South Korean icon had an impressive performance in the Premier League matches during the 2023/24 season, scoring 17 goals and matching his second-best single-season tally in the competition. This came after taking on increased responsibility following Harry Kane's departure from Spurs.

Despite nearing his 32nd birthday and speculation about a potential move to Saudi Pro League club, Son is set to stay at Tottenham for another year at least.

A new level of responsibility for Son

Son stepped up significantly during the last season after Harry Kane left Spurs. His contribution was instrumental in helping Tottenham finish fifth place - an improvement from their eighth-place finish just twelve months ago - which translates into qualification for the newly reformatted Europa League.

This isn't unfamiliar territory for Son who played a significant role when Spurs reached Champions League final under Mauricio Pochettino back in 2019 through a dramatic semi-final comeback against Erik ten Hag’s Ajax team.

No interest in moving to Saudi Arabia

Last summer saw rumors circulating about Son Heung-min potentially moving to Saudi Arabia. However, he emphatically revealed he had little interest in such a move. With this recent contract extension decision by Tottenham Hotspur, it seems clear that both parties are keen on continuing their successful partnership well into future seasons.

Son Heung-min, Tottenham Hotspur forward, said:

"If I wanted to go there, I would not be here. I love playing football. Obviously money is also important but I dream [of] playing [in the] Premier League."

Son Heung-min's contract extension is a strategic move by Tottenham Hotspur, ensuring they retain their captain and key player for another year. This decision not only provides stability to the team but also sends a clear message about the club's ambitions for future seasons. With Son's proven track record and commitment to Spurs, fans can look forward to more exciting performances in the upcoming seasons.
