Certain football pundits are renowned for coming out with questionable comments, but what are the dumbest football punditry moments of all time?

Having scoured the archives, we have found a handful of outrageous quotes from some of the industry’s biggest names, including Michael Owen, Jamie Redknapp and Ian Wright.

Without further ado, it’s time to relive five of the dumbest football punditry quotes in history.

Michael Owen states the obvious

“When they don't score, they hardly ever win.”

Manchester City are renowned for humiliating their opponents with high-scoring victories. However, when they don’t score, they hardly ever win – according to Michael Owen.

Talking on BT Sport back in 2015, Owen stated the obvious when he dished up one of the dumbest football punditry quotes of all time. He also once said: “If there’s a bit of rain about, it makes the surface wet.”

Jamie Redknapp explains family hierarchy

“Peter Schmeichel will be like a father figure to Kasper Schmeichel.”

It’s funny you should say that, Jamie, as Peter Schmeichel is in fact Kasper Schmeichel’s father! Of course, Redknapp would have known this at the time, but that doesn’t make his quote any less stupid.

Ian Wright forgets how international caps work

“If Glenn Hoddle had been any other nationality, he would have had 70 or 80 caps for England.”

Ian Wright is widely regarded as one of the most likeable and knowledgeable football pundits on TV, but even the top names in the industry get things wrong from time to time.

Needless to say, if Glenn Hoddle had been any other nationality, he would not have played for England. Hoddle made 53 appearances for the Three Lions and did not pull on the jersey of any other country.

Mark Lawrenson defies human anatomy

“He’s got a knock on his shin there, just above the knee.”

Mark Lawrenson’s punditry career spanned multiple decades, with the ex-Liverpool player featuring on BBC programmes such as Match of the Day and Football Focus. Evidently, his knowledge of the human body does not match his punditry skills.

Kevin Keegan prefers a broken leg to cramp

“In some ways, cramp is worse than having a broken leg.”

Having won two Ballon d’Ors, four top-flight titles and a European Cup for good measure, Kevin Keegan will always be remembered as one of the greatest footballers of his generation.

However, the former Liverpool, Newcastle and Hamburger SV superstar clearly has a strange view on pain, as he once stated that having cramp is worse than breaking a leg!
