The Brazilian legend was indispensable member of Chelsea’s iconic 2020/21 squad

Chelsea Football Club has officially confirmed that their veteran centre-back, Thiago Silva, will be leaving the club to join Fluminense at the end of this season. The 39-year-old Brazilian international made a high-profile switch from Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) to Stamford Bridge in the summer of 2020 and has since been an integral part of Chelsea's defence.

Silva initially planned to stay with Chelsea for just one year but ended up enjoying a successful four-year spell in West London. During his tenure, he made an impressive 152 appearances across all competitions for the Blues.

Under Thomas Tuchel's expert guidance, Silva played a pivotal role in securing several prestigious titles for Chelsea. These include winning the Champions League during his first term at the club and later lifting both UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup trophies.

Chelsea need to fire replacement in summer

With Silva's departure now confirmed, attention turns towards who will fill his boots as part of Chelsea’s defensive line-up. Despite being 39 years old, Silva remained a first-choice player under Mauricio Pochettino management - indicating that replacing him could be a significant challenge.

However, Chelsea squad boasts several young talents within its squad who have already started matches recently. These include Axel Disasi, Trevoh Chalobah and Benoit Badiashile – all potential candidates to step into Silva's shoes.

Chelsea released statement:

"Following four seasons with Chelsea, Thiago Silva will depart after our final game of the Premier League season against Bournemouth at Stamford Bridge and re-join Brazilian club Fluminense,"

"Chelsea have agreed with Thiago that he can join up early with his new teammates after signing a two-year contract with the Brazilian club. Thiago will be allowed to train with Fluminense prior to his registration transferring on July 1.

"The 39-year-old will depart Stamford Bridge having made more than 150 appearances for the Blues and having lifted the UEFA Champions League, FIFA Club World Cup, and the UEFA Super Cup.

"He has also forged a lasting bond with Blues supporters and was named the club's Player of the Year at the end of the 2022/23 campaign."

Farewell match on cards for Silva

After being part of the Blues side that demolished West Ham United with an emphatic 5-0 victory over the weekend, it is expected that Silva will retain his spot in starting XI for Saturday evening’s Premier League match against Nottingham Forest. This match could potentially serve as one of his final appearances on English soil before he embarks on his new journey with Fluminense.

While Silva's departure will undoubtedly leave a significant gap in Chelsea's defence, it also opens up opportunities for the club’s younger players to step up and make their mark. As sports fans and sports betting enthusiasts alike watch these developments unfold, the anticipation surrounding who will emerge as Chelsea’s new defensive stalwart is sure to add an exciting dimension to the remainder of the season.
