Appointed as head coach in December, Eckert led Southampton from relegation risk to fourth place and the Championship promotion playoffs

Southampton owner Dragan Solak has confirmed that he will not dismiss head coach Tonda Eckert, despite the latter's involvement in a spying scandal against rival Championship clubs. This decision comes after Eckert publicly apologized for his actions.

Southampton owner, Dragan Solak, said:

"I think he deserves a second chance and I would give it to him. My full support would be behind him actually, because I think he's a super-talented manager."

Eckert, who was appointed as the permanent head coach in December following a brief stint as caretaker boss, led Southampton from a relegation battle to fourth place and the Championship promotion play-offs. However, this achievement was marred when it came to light that Saints had been observing their opponents' training sessions.

The club faced severe repercussions for this breach of trust and sportsmanship. They were expelled from the play-offs and deducted four points for the 2026-27 season by an independent disciplinary commission.

Fallout of espionage

Details about this controversial incident emerged after an arbitration panel published written reasons behind Southampton's punishment. It was revealed that Eckert had put "extreme pressure" on a junior staff member to carry out what they felt was morally wrong - spying on other teams' training sessions.

Eckert admitted to orchestrating what the commission described as a "contrived and determined plan from the top down". He also confessed his surprise upon learning that such practices were prohibited under EFL regulations. Southampton admitted to spying on Oxford United and Ipswich Town during regular season games, followed by Middlesbrough before their play-off semi-final match. Despite these unethical tactics, Eckert claimed none of these actions affected their sporting performance - an assertion which only adds fuel to this contentious issue.

Despite standing by his head coach through these turbulent times, Solak issued a stern warning: "You almost broke my heart. You do it again; you'll kill me." He further emphasized that Eckert must familiarize himself with the EFL book of rules by July, or he would no longer be able to work for him. Solak expressed his hope that Eckert would learn from this experience and go on to have an incredible career. He stressed the importance of avoiding such mistakes in the future, highlighting the need for ethical conduct in sports.

Dragan Solak added:

"I believe Tonda that he didn't know that it was the rule that he was breaking. My personal opinion, and the opinion of the board, is that he is a manager who deserves to be backed by us and to be supported by us. I will obviously seek advice from the team. I will seek advice from the players, from the fans. But yes, if it's ultimately my decision, he stays."

"In Italy or in Germany, where Tonda was working, this is basically common practice that nobody cares about."

Plea for forgiveness

In an eight-minute video published on Southampton's social media channels, Eckert addressed supporters directly. Speaking "from the heart" without a script, he explained why he had sent a staff member to observe rival teams' training sessions. He also expressed his hope that with time, fans could "understand and forgive" his actions.

Tonda Eckert, Southampton manager, said:

"For everything that has happened I want to apologise. I hold my hands up because as a head coach I am responsible.

"I am devastated that after six months of building that relationship [with supporters] back up, the season has come to an end, an end that couldn't have left us in a worse place than we are in right now. I am a young coach, I have made a mistake, and I take full responsibility."

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of fair play and integrity in sports. It underscores how crucial it is for those involved in professional sports - from players to coaches - to adhere strictly to regulations and uphold sporting values at all times.
