Robin van Persie, the Dutch football legend, has ruled out a return to Arsenal due to the lingering sensitivity surrounding his high-profile switch to Manchester United. Van Persie played for Arsenal from 2004 until 2012 before making the controversial move that turned him into a villain in the eyes of many Gooners.
During his tenure at Arsenal, Van Persie dazzled fans with his exceptional skills and performance. However, it's been over a decade since he made the infamous transfer and according to him, this topic remains "sensitive" in North London. He believes it would be best if he kept that chapter closed for good.
Van Persie's statement on future aspirations
Now aged 41 and having transitioned into management in 2024 with Eredivisie club SC Heerenveen, Van Persie spoke candidly about his future aspirations. He acknowledged that returning to Arsenal in any coaching capacity seems improbable given the circumstances of his departure.
Robin van Persie, Former Arsenal and Manchester United striker, said:
"I don’t expect to work at Arsenal. I think that door is closed, ecause of my switch to Manchester United, that is my assessment. You never know in football, but that is my assessment. It is still sensitive for them, not for me. It is especially sensitive for the Arsenal fans. I have learned that planning so far ahead makes no sense at all. I don’t want that either. I mainly live in the here and now. I really enjoy it here and I am very proud to be the coach of SC Heerenveen. I feel I feel very welcome within the club and among the fans. I also think that is important that you feel welcome."
Van Persie enjoyed remarkable success during his time with both clubs. At Arsenal, he scored an impressive 132 goals and provided 56 assists across 278 appearances. His contributions were instrumental in securing the FA Cup for the club back in 2005 - a memorable chapter indeed.
However, things took a turn when he decided to join Manchester United in 2012 which significantly altered his relationship with Gunners fans. Despite this setback though, Van Persie continued shining at Old Trafford where he contributed another impressive tally of stats: scoring 58 goals and providing 15 assists across just 105 games! This led Manchester United straight towards their Premier League title victory back in2013.
What lies ahead?
For many supporters of Arsenal, Robin van Persie’s legacy is complex. His years of brilliance at the Emirates are often overshadowed by his controversial departure. However, his achievements as a player are undeniable and his current stint as a coach hints at a promising future in football management - just not one likely to involve Arsenal.
While Van Persie's past with Arsenal may be marred by controversy, there is no denying the impact he had on both clubs during his playing career. As he continues to make strides in management, it will be interesting to see where this new chapter takes him - even if it won't lead him back to North London.
