Premier League broadcasting platform expected to cut out the middlemen

It has been reported that Premier League bosses are discussing the idea of parting ways with Sky Sports and BT Sport in the coming years, with an all-inclusive broadcasting platform on the cards.

Sky has been at the forefront of the Premier League’s broadcasting since its inception in 1992, while BT Sport and Amazon Prime Video have also played key roles in bringing top-flight football to UK television screens.

However, the Premier League is reportedly ready to ditch the current multi-partner deal at the end of the next rights cycle, with plans in place for an exclusive Premier League broadcasting platform.

The 2025-28 Premier League TV rights are set to go up for auction later this year. Sky, BT and Amazon are expected to retain the rights for the foreseeable future, but football fans could see radical changes from 2028 onwards.

With subscription costs continuing to rise – and the number of subscriptions required to watch football growing all the time – many fans are getting priced out of watching their team on TV or via streaming services.

Kevin Miles, chief executive of the Football Supporters Association, said:

“There’s no question that supporters are increasingly feeling the financial strain. We’re not untouched by the general cost of living crisis but the more platforms there are, the more subscriptions we have to find.

“For those fans who want to watch every one of the club’s televised games, the costs are really starting to mount.”

The Premier League has developed into a global brand over the past three decades, with television broadcasters raking in ludicrous sums of money thanks to millions of paying customers.

However, sports broadcasting has started to move in a different direction in recent times, with streaming services and other platforms becoming more popular among fans.

For that reason, it is surely only a matter of time before the Premier League ends the current multi-partner broadcasting model and provides an exclusive platform.
