Zubimendi hasn't ruled out staying at Real Sociedad for another season

Martin Zubimendi, the 26-year-old Spanish international midfielder, has cast a shadow of uncertainty over his much-anticipated transfer to Arsenal this summer. Despite refusing to rule out the possibility of remaining at Real Sociedad, his current club, speculation continues to swirl around his future.

Zubimendi is no stranger to loyalty. Last year he came close to joining Liverpool but ultimately chose to stay with Real Sociedad - the club he has been with since childhood. His decision was not lost on Arsenal who have long admired the talented player.

It's understood that Arsenal's hierarchy have been confident about signing Zubimendi, whose release clause stands at a hefty €60 million (£50.5m). However, recent developments may cause them some concern.

Medical claim that raised eyebrows

Last week reports emerged suggesting that Zubimendi was due for a medical check-up with Arsenal as part of finalising his move. This news sparked excitement among fans who were eager for him to join Mikel Arteta’s side. However, in an interview with Radio Nacional de Espana on Tuesday, Zubimendi left everyone guessing when asked about his future plans. He stated that he had not made up his mind yet and did not dismiss the chance of staying another season at Real Sociedad.

Martin Zubimendi, Real Sociedad midfielder, said:

‘Of course there are options, but it’s true that it seems like it’s going to be a different, long summer, and I don’t know how it will end,’

‘I don’t think thinking about it right now is my priority. I’m here with the national team, which I think is already quite demanding, and if I have to say something, then I will.’

Adding fuel to this fire of speculation was an Instagram post by Zubimendi himself after these reports surfaced. The midfielder uploaded a picture from a beach in San Sebastian rather than from any medical facility associated with Arsenal.

Martin Zubimendi added:

‘It’s an example of what surrounds football. Many times I wake up in the morning and read things that I didn’t know I had done. That was a clear example. It’s true that I don’t take it very seriously, but anyway, I uploaded those photos to emphasise a little that it wasn’t exactly the reality that was happening.’

As it stands now, Martin Zubimendi's transfer saga remains unresolved and continues its rollercoaster ride in football headlines worldwide. Whether he will don the Arsenal jersey or stay loyal to Real Sociedad is a question that only time can answer.
